To Live Without Pain

Editor’s Note: The following poetry was written by 15-year-old Samyukta Iyer from Georgia, USA.

To live without pain
Is to live a life in numbing bliss
For in the abysmal depths of your brain
An obscure gene is amiss

To exist without fear
Of being burned or torn apart
Never able to acknowledge and hear
The syncopation in the heart

To wallow in ignorance
And never taste angst or depression
Though a seemingly pleasant trance
Is humanity’s final regression

To be human is to love and to live is to be open
As hearts and minds reach out, unafraid of being broken
