I Don't Want to Die

You can see it in my eyes

As they scavenge the room for a lone wolf with a bag.

I don’t want to die.

You can see it in the way I hide from the faceless killer,

My world becoming increasingly black and white.

Avoid the movie theater.

Look over your shoulder in the halls.

If the worst should come:

If you cannot run:

If you cannot hide:

Going to the synagogue is an act of bravery.

I want you to look me in the eyes and tell me that seventeen died because there were too many doors.

I want to see you tell a grieving mother that a “good guy” with the instrument that killed her child could have saved the day.

I want to hear you say that a gun is worth more than my life.

And if I perish -

I want the world to know I’m not surprised.
