Editor’s Note: The following poem was written by past Defiant staff writer Salomée Levy.

On this day,

I drifted away

Just like the ocean waves.

Suddenly, I no longer

Held on to

Your hand

No longer locked in a cage,

Distant from the anchorage

I was on my own.

Free at last

Free to speak my mind,

Like the way the wind roars

During a storm.

Free to explore

Like bee pollinating the flowers.

Free to walk

Without a leash tied behind me.

I am the age

To be the person

I visualize of becoming

From birth.
